 Hello!

My name is Mindy and I am a Registered Nurse.  I am still transitioning from being a nurse to a teacher as this will start my 10th year.  After 30 plus years of working as a nurse, it is still hard to take the nurse out of me.

I live on a small farm in the woods of Upshur County.  Born and raised in Nebraska on a horse ranch and wheat fields.  I had no brothers.  I do bring farm stories to school with me.  Don't be surprised if your children get an agriculture lesson or two!  I currently have chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, parakeets, dogs, a goat, and cats. I am never bored.

I graduated nursing school from Kilgore College School of Nursing in 1985. Those were the days of a white uniform, white pantyhose, white leather shoes, and a nursing cap.  I have worked in the hospital, operating room, with developmentally delayed children and adults, in a private General Practice physician's office, Hospice for 16 years, and Good Shepherd's Healthy Hotline. I continue nursing on the side by doing health assessments for insurance agencies. I  enjoy my nursing career and am pleased to share my knowledge with your children.

I teach your children as I would teach a family or a patient.  Health care providers encounter every walk of life and that is how I try to teach my students. I try to get on a level the students can understand.   I have been told I am very blunt.  I use medical language in my class and I expect my students to pick up that vocabulary and use it as their years' progress.

My goal is to enlighten your child who may already have an interest in healthcare and to provide interesting lessons to spark further interest in those that haven't chosen a pathway.

I will try to prepare the student for the healthcare market and adult life by developing a professional demeanor,  teamwork attitude, respect for others, and an increased ability to communicate effectively with all walks of life.

If you are a medical professional, I would love to have you visit our class and talk about your field of expertise and enlighten my classes.

Makeup WORK
Any missed work can be made up during each 3 week's grading period. If the assignment is turned in late, they will receive partial credit if not an excused absence.  The student will be responsible to ask for their work.  Work not turned in will result in a zero.

GRADING
Testing 60 %  Daily grades 40%

*The daily Cursive journal will count as a Test Grade and be graded periodically.  This consists of 5 words written in cursive daily and their signature.  Cursive is still a form of communication and many cannot read cursive writing.  I require my students to learn how to read and write in cursive during the year.  I will also help your child establish a unique signature for legal documents.  Please encourage your child to use these skills.

* Medical Article of the Week with a cursive interpretation page: REQUIRED  This incorporates reading and writing cursive, and exposure to new ideas that are being presented to the medical professionals and the public. This is a daily grade and is due each week by Friday. The grade will be 100 if handed in on time.  If the article is handed in late, I will deduct 10 points for each week late and will not take back articles after each 3 week grading period.  I encourage writing and research by the use of actual news from a magazine, newspaper, world wide web, or the television with a summary in their own words.
